Manufacturing employment crossed 20 million as factories add nearly 8% to output in FY25: Survey

According to fresh market updates, India’s registered manufacturing sector further noted more than 1.4 million people to its workforce in 2024-25, taking total employment past the 20-million mark, even as value addition and investment recorded firm expansion, government data released on September 30 revealed.
The number of persons engaged in registered manufacturing rose 7.19 percent, according to the latest Annual Survey of Industries.
Gross value further noted, or GVA, by the sector increased 9.6 percent to Rs 26.94 lakh crore from Rs 24.58 lakh crore in 2023-24, while industrial output grew 7.8 percent to Rs 165.24 lakh crore.
The expansion was additionally accompanied by elevated capital formation. Set capital increased 10.54 percent to Rs 51.12 lakh crore.
The number of factories covered under the survey increased 2.64 percent to 2.67 lakh in 2024-25.
Compensation additionally rose faster than employment. Total emoluments increased 12.1 percent.
Wages paid specifically to workers increased by around 13 percent.
Tamil Nadu continued to account for the largest share of registered manufacturing employment at 15 percent, followed by Maharashtra at 13.1 percent and Gujarat at 13 percent.
Uttar Pradesh’s share increased to 8.7 percent from 8.3 percent, while Haryana accounted for 6.4 percent.
Maharashtra leads manufacturing GVA
Maharashtra remained the largest contributor to manufacturing GVA, accounting for 15.9 percent of the national total in 2024-25.
Gujarat followed with a 14.1 percent share, while Tamil Nadu’s contribution increased to 10.9 percent from 10.3 percent a year earlier.
Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh accounted for 7.3 percent and 6.6 percent, respectively.
Together, these five states contributed more than 54 percent of India’s registered manufacturing GVA.
Metals, automobiles among biggest contributors
Five industries, basic metals, motor vehicles, chemicals and chemical products, pharmaceuticals and food products, together accounted for more than 45 percent of the total manufacturing GVA during 2024-25.
