SEBI had rolled out the Document Number Verification System in April 2025 to allow recipients to verify whether a physical letter or notice, including show-cause notices, was actually issued by the regulator.

Under the revamped system, the format has additionally been aligned with the outward number generated through SEBI's e-Office system, according to a press release issued today.

Recipients of a SEBI letter, or any person acting on their behalf, can verify the authenticity of the communication by entering the mandatory details after validating their credentials.

The details required include the outward number, name of the SEBI official issuing the letter, date of the letter, subject matter and name of the recipient.

If the details entered match SEBI's records, the system will confirm that the letter or communication was issued by the regulator.

If the details do not match, the system will indicate that no record has been found. The verifier can then re-enter the details or seek confirmation from SEBI by emailing dnvs@sebi.gov.in.

SEBI, that stated, clarified that verification through the system only confirms whether the communication was issued by the regulator and does not constitute verification of the contents of the letter.

The revamped system has been operational since September 2026.
