MeitY has amended the Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirement of Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021, adding "screen Protectors for smartphones".

The Compulsory Registration Order (CRO) provisions apply for conformity with that standard with effect from April 1, 2027, i.e. from that date screen protectors can be manufactured, imported, stored or sold in India only from a BIS-registered factory carrying the standard mark.

Optiemus Infracom, a Noida-based electronics and telecom manufacturing firm, rolled out RhinoTech on August 13, 2025, a locally manufactured smartphone screen protector brand developed at its Noida facility using technology from Corning Incorporated, the US specialty glass maker known for Gorilla Glass used in smartphones.

At 11:25 am on September 22, Optiemus Infracom shares were trading 14.5% elevated at Rs 675.9 apiece.

Under the CRO framework, products covered by notified standards cannot be manufactured, imported or sold in India without mandatory certification compliance. For screen protectors, the proposed standards are anticipated to cover parameters such as impact resistance, material quality, transparency and durability.

The move is anticipated to significantly alter India’s smartphone accessories market, which consumes more than 550 million units annually and stays heavily dependent on low-cost imports, particularly from China and other Asian manufacturing hubs, according to market estimates.

The localisation propel additionally aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent call for reducing dependence on imported products and saving foreign exchange reserves by encouraging domestic manufacturing and greater use of indigenous products.

Ashok Kumar, Chairman, Gupta Optiemus Infracom, told PTI in August that the firm is eyeing Rs 2,000 crore topline from tempered glass screen protectors.

He stated, "In terms of business, by March 2027, I am expecting a sale of Rs 2,000 to 2,800 crore. We all know that the mobile is our lifeline, and to protect that lifeline, a good screen protector is very important. In the last 30 years, all the screen protectors that are being imported to India have been coming from all over the world, which has no standard. After 3 years of hard work, MeitY and BIS have made their standard for the first time in the world. The meaning of standard is how much resilience should be there in its screen, so that if your phone accidentally falls, the screen breaks, but the main screen should not break. The screen protector can break, but the main screen should not break. With this aim, we are moving forward in this direction, so that we can give a quality screen protector to the people of India.”
