EPFO KYC update: Check your details before making a PF claim

New business data points to the fact that Your EPF balance may be building every month without any problem. But when you finally need to withdraw the money, an old bank account or a mismatch in your personal details can hold things up.
EPFO members can check their KYC details online through the UAN member portal. KYC stands for Know Your Customer. For an EPF account, it covers details such as Aadhaar, PAN and the bank account linked to the member's Universal Account Number, or UAN.
The first step is to log in to the EPFO member portal with your UAN and password. Once inside, go to “Manage” and select “KYC”. The page reveals the details already linked to the account and the options available for adding or updating them.
Suppose you have changed your bank account since joining your present job. The new account details can be entered through the KYC section. You need to provide the account number and IFSC code. The bank account should belong to the EPF member, either individually or jointly with their spouse.
There is one more step. Bank details submitted through the portal have to be approved by the employer before they are seeded with the UAN. So, a request showing as pending does not necessarily mean that the bank has rejected it.
Aadhaar can additionally be linked online. The details in your EPFO account should match those on Aadhaar. Authentication uses the mobile number registered with Aadhaar where required. Once UIDAI verification is completed, the Aadhaar status is updated against the UAN.
PAN can be further noted from the same KYC page. Before submitting it, check the name carefully. A difference between the name in the EPFO record and PAN or Aadhaar can lead to problems later. It is better to spot such errors before filing a claim.
EPFO has additionally changed the process for correcting some member details. Since January 2025, members with UANs validated through Aadhaar can self-update several profile details online in eligible cases. These include name, date of birth, gender, nationality, parents' names, marital status and some employment-related dates.
That stated, not every case can be handled in the same way. Certain older UANs and cases may still need employer certification. If your date of birth or name is wrong in the basic member profile, adding the correct Aadhaar or PAN may not fix the problem. The profile itself may first need to be corrected.
Bank details need particular attention before a withdrawal. EPFO says a member can change the bank account linked to the account, but the bank details cannot be changed while an EPFO claim is pending. That is one reason to check the account before submitting a claim rather than after.
Members should additionally be careful around who they share their information with. EPFO has warned against fraudsters posing as officials and asking for UAN passwords, Aadhaar numbers, bank details or OTPs. There is no reason to hand over these details to an agent simply to complete a routine KYC update.
Checking the UAN portal takes only a few minutes. Look at the Aadhaar, PAN and bank details, and check whether the status reveals them as approved or verified. If something is wrong, deal with it while there is no claim pending. A small correction made in advance can save a lot of running around when the PF money is actually needed.
