India unemployment rate falls to six-month low of 5% in August as rural jobs improve

As per the latest business developments, India’s unemployment rate declined to a six-month low of 5 percent in August from 5.1 percent in July, as improving employment conditions in rural areas offset a marginal deterioration in urban India, government data released on September 15 revealed.
The unemployment rate for people aged 15 years and above was the lowest since February 2026, when it stood at 4.9 percent, according to the latest data released by the government.
The improvement was largely fuelled by rural India. Rural unemployment declined sharply to 4.1 percent in August from 4.5 percent in July, its lowest level since January 2026.
Urban unemployment, that stated, edged elevated to 6.8 percent from 6.7 percent in the previous month, indicating that the improvement in the headline number remained concentrated outside cities.
The slide in unemployment came alongside an gain in the number of people participating in the labour market.
The overall Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR), which measures the proportion of the population either working or looking for work, increased to 55.6 percent in August from 55.4 percent in July.
Rural LFPR rose to 58.2 percent from 58 percent, while the urban rate remained unchanged at 50.4 percent.
Female participation additionally strengthened. Overall female LFPR increased to 34.8 percent from 34.4 percent in July. The gain was led by rural women, where participation rose to 39.4 percent from 38.8 percent. Urban female LFPR was largely unchanged at 25.4 percent.
Employment marks additionally improved, with the overall Worker Population Ratio (WPR) rising to 52.8 percent from 52.5 percent in July, its highest level since March 2026.
Rural WPR increased to 55.8 percent from 55.4 percent, while the urban ratio remained unchanged at 47 percent.
The improvement was visible across genders in rural areas. Rural male unemployment declined to 4.3 percent from 4.6 percent, while the unemployment rate among rural women eased to 3.9 percent from 4.3 percent.
Urban trends were weaker. Male unemployment in cities rose to 6.1 percent from 5.9 percent, while female unemployment remained broadly stable.
On a year-on-year basis, labour force participation additionally improved. Overall LFPR increased by 0.6 percentage point from 55 percent in August 2025, while female LFPR rose by 1.1 percentage points.
Rural employment remained the key driver, with rural WPR rising 1.3 percentage points from a year earlier to 55.8 percent. Urban WPR, in contrast, declined to 47 percent from 47.5 percent.
The PLFS monthly unemployment numbers are based on the Current Weekly Status approach, which determines a person’s employment status based on their activity during the seven days preceding the survey.
